Biomechanical models to simulate consequences of maxillofacial surgery.

چکیده
This paper presents the biomechanical finite element models that have been developed in the framework of the computer-assisted maxillofacial surgery. After a brief overview of the continuous elastic modelling method, two models are introduced and their use for computer-assisted applications discussed. The first model deals with orthognathic surgery and aims at predicting the facial consequences of maxillary and mandibular osteotomies. For this, a generic three-dimensional model of the face is automatically adapted to the morphology of the patient by the mean of elastic registration. Qualitative simulations of the consequences of an osteotomy of the mandible can thus be provided. The second model addresses the Sleep Apnoea Syndrome. Its aim is to develop a complete modelling of the interaction between airflow and upper airways walls during breathing. Dynamical simulations of the interaction during a respiratory cycle are computed and compared with observed phenomena.

متن کاملOn constitutive modeling of soft tissue for the long-term prediction of cranio-maxillofacial surgery outcome
In this paper, we discuss physically based approaches to the modeling of deformable soft tissue for the long-term prediction of patient’s postoperative appearance in cranio-maxillofacial (CMF) surgery simulations. Since the biomechanical properties of living tissues and their numerical modeling are, in general, very complex, our focus is on the investigation of qualitative and quantitative diff...
متن کاملThree-dimensional finite element analysis of mechanical stress in symphyseal fractured human mandible reduced with miniplates during mastication.
PURPOSE In this study we tried to analyze the stress distribution in a symphyseal fractured human mandible reduced by 2 different methods--reduction with 1 miniplate or with 2 miniplates--by using finite element (FE) analysis, and then compared the results with an intact mandible. MATERIALS AND METHODS Three-dimensional FE models of an intact mandible and symphyseal fractured mandibles reduce...
متن کاملA Continuous Biomedical Model to Study Facial Gestures in Speech: Muscle Coordinations and Mechanical Properties
Many biomechanical models of the human face have been proposed in the literature, mainly developed in the context of computer graphics animation (Sifakis et al., 2006; Gladilin et al., 2001), computer-aided maxillofacial surgery (Chabanas et al., 2003) or speech production (Lucero & Munhall, 1999; Piterman & Munhall, 2001; Gomi et al., 2006). Most of them propose to model the face with a volume...
متن کاملFinite Element Model of the Face Soft Tissue for Computer-assisted Maxillofacial Surgery
In orthognatic surgery, patient mandible and maxilla are repositioned to correct face dismorphosis due to congenital malformation or traumatism. An important issue is to evaluate the consequences of these bone repositioning on the face soft tissue, in order to predict the post-operative aesthetic aspect of the patient. This problem is addressed using a biomechanical model of the patient skin ti...
